"Samye, Tibet" by Cannon Hersey
REMOVE THE LANDMARK,
June 21—August 9

Gallery 384 is pleased to present “Remove the Landmark,” a show of newly commissioned and recent work by Cannon Hersey and Aaron Yassin.  The show will open with a reception for the artists 5—9 PM, Saturday, June 21 and running through August 9, 2008.

“Remove the Landmark” focuses on two of the world’s most significant trade and cultural passages: the ancient Silk Route, which stretched from China to Rome, and the Hudson River Valley, which was linked by the Eire Canal to the North American Great Lakes.

Cannon Hersey’s panoramic photographs show the great temples, fortresses and redoubts that line the major passages from China through Tibet and Nepal.  Looking beyond political divisions Hersey’s work shows the region as a whole in its profoundly civilized splendor; featured pieces are matted with the antique fabrics that were originally traded from these nations.

Aaron Yassin’s kaleidoscopic images, commissioned for Gallery 384, depict the historic bridges and mansions that line the Hudson River Valley.  Transformed into whirling abstract motifs, Lyndhurst, Olana, the George Washington Bridge and other famous structures are set aloft and then replicated, turning single locations into multiple patterns.

In light of recent political protests in China and Tibet and encroaching development both there and in the Hudson River Valley, “Remove the Landmark” asks whether the monumental past will remain as a way for humanity to measure space and time, or whether all such places will inevitably be forever cut off from the landscapes and peoples they addressed and defined.
